Here is updated information for the LBI FLY. Attached is the updated schedule. The Chamber of Commerce of LBI would like the fliers to register this year before September 5th. They feel it is important to have your information in order for them to receive donations for lunches, dinners and tee shirts. Please register at lbifly.com Go to the registration. Please indicate if you would like a tee shirt size. We would like to accommodate the kite fliers and their sizes in our order by Sept 5, 2018. If you plan to compete in the sport kite competition or indoor, go to the eastern league website to register. You can also indicate if you will be coming to the Saturday evening dinner. Long Beach Island is looking forward to welcoming all the fliers who will be involved in this fun festival. Rolf Zimmermann Workshop Information October 4 through 5, 2018
The 3rd LBI FLY International kite festival will begin this year with a two-day kite workshop by Rolf Zimmermann. We are honored to have Rolf as part of the festival this year. Indoor Information October 5, 2018
The Indoor fly will again be held at the LBI School in Ship Bottom at 201 20th street, Ship Bottom, NJ 08008. The building will be available to the festival at 5pm for setup and kite flier greetings. The indoor competition will begin with the single line competition at 6:30. Competitors meeting will be around 6:15 to review rules, introduce judges and turn in music. Light refreshments will be available for invited kite fliers.
Saturday and Sunday Dinner Information October 6 and 7, 2018
We are planning on having two group dinners for the kite fliers during the festival. Saturday evening dinner will be located at the Surf City Hotel beginning at 6:30 to 11pm and is open to all invited and attending kite fliers, their families, LBI FLY volunteers, friends of the festival and the LBI public. There will be live music by Dan Brown throughout the evening. We are estimating the cost will be $25 which includes gratuity, dinner, soft drinks, tea/ coffee and dessert. If you received a wristband for the dinner, please wear it so you will not be asked for payment at the door.
Sunday evening dinner will be held in Barnegat Light, NJ (404 Broadway, Barnegat Light) following our night fly located at the Old Barney lighthouse. Location to be announced. We are looking forward to a great evening to gather together after a successful weekend of flying. Sunday dinner will be open to all invited and attending kite fliers, their families, LBI FLY volunteers, and friends of the festival.
Festival Arrival and Setup Information
The festival begins at noon Friday with a Fun Fly. We were able to secure a permit for use of the Ship Bottom beaches from 5rd street to 20th street Friday October 5 through Monday October 8th. Parking for kite fliers will be at the CVS parking lot at 3rd street, however street parking is an option for fliers arriving early in the mornings. The main demonstration field will be set up between 10th and 11t street. At this street, there is vehicle access for sand vehicles only. We will have our local friend Tony with his Hummer to help kiters transport their bags at this location. The main sound area will be located at this street in the 11th Street Festival Tent. Lunches and breakfasts will be delivered to this tent throughout the festival. Public information, kiter information, kite sales, tee shirt sales and volunteers will be at the 9th street tent throughout the festival. If it is indicated in your packet for lunches, come to this main tent for pick up during the festival. Breakfast and coffee have been donated and is available to ALL kiters on Saturday, Sunday and Monday at the main information tent on 11th street.
Early arriving kite fliers are welcome to setup and fly on Friday in Ship Bottom from 5rd to 20th street. Kite fliers should begin to assemble on the beaches in their recommended areas at 9 am on Saturday and Sunday. Our head judge, Maggie Engvall will announce at the indoor fly the beginning of the flier’s meeting for the competition on Saturday morning. Those not attending Friday night's indoor should plan on being at the 11th street beach in Ship Bottom by 9am Saturday, October 6. The meeting will be held at the sound tent on this street at our main demonstration field. Break down of kites should be by 5pm each day. Plan to break down kites by 4pm Sunday to prepare to move to the night fly site at the Barnegat Lighthouse at the north end of the island. We are able to begin set up at the lighthouse at 5pm.
Monday set up is planned for 10am, however kiters are able to set up as early as they would like. Plan for lighter crowds early in the morning on Monday with more people arriving in the afternoon. The island schools are open on Monday October 8; however, the children and families have come to the beach after school closes.
Field / Kite Set up and General Information
Rough plan for setup of kites. Large kites should begin to organize near the 5rd street beaches and spread down the beach toward 8th street. Please refer to Jeff King for locations. Gary Engvall and Kurtis Jones are also available to help. We tried to work our best set up of fields prior to the festival for everyone’s enjoyment. The field north of the main demonstration field should be open for ground displays. Candy display, Bol racing and Rokkaku battle will be held on main demonstration field. Art single line kite dedicated field will be located south of the main demonstration field at 12th to 13th street. Additional Art single line kites can fit in where they feel is best for the display of their kites. Learn to fly and dual line practice fields will be from 14th to 15th street. Memorial fly will be held at the main field at 1pm. Plan to bring any memorial white kites or special kites to help us remember those who are no longer with us.
We will need help with the Mayor’s Rokkaku battle on Sunday at 1pm. Any kiters who are experienced Rok fliers please come to the main sound tent on Sunday morning to sign up to help. We had a lot of fun last year and hope to put on a great show again this year.
Buggy Kite rides and demonstrations will be held at 15th to 20th streets in Ship Bottom. There is a large handicap street access at 15th street. Buggy kiters coming early should be able to find street parking on 15th or 16th streets. There will be volunteers available from 11am to 2pm on Saturday, Sunday and Monday to help with filling our waiver forms and fitting helmets for children.
Wind Garden Information
The Wind Garden will be located at 15th to 16th streets. Suzanne Cormier will lead the project at this location with local children. Local oyster and clam advocate groups will be on hand to assist and donate oyster materials as part of the wind garden this year.
There are many local restaurants on the island who are supporting the kite festival from hamburgers, sushi, to fine dining. Many are offering grab and go options during the festival for breakfast and lunch.
We will have a festival map available at the public information tent and at the indoor fly that will show the event details, locations of grab and go restaurants, and locations of our dinners.
